Trying to obtain land for Gardening

Does anyone know the first steps, I need to take in acquiring a plot(one that is nice sized, just across the road from my home), for a community garden.

It needs a little more work than I had originally planned for, but I did know it would cost me a few dollars. Nothing major, just a wire, mesh tarp lining the bottom, glued to each corner with wooden rods, easily reglueable if the worms eat the glue in place. Two rubber feet have snapped from being under pressure, and has left two gaping holes, plus the whole thing needs a wash, it's been outside under the back porch in the elements, since I dumped my first batch of worms in my garden bed, just after moving to our home. I will update with the pic later, then again when remodeled.

Got some lettuce(Romain, worms eat just as Gourmet as I do... sans meat) goin' in, waiting in the refrigerator is some radishes, and other various items. And plus, I have some coffee grounds and egg shells(again).

But first, I'm gonna try something(wrote this, now back to work)... UPDATE: what had happened was, I went diggin' for some worms(a lot), along with some castings, and placed them in a bowl. Then, I made a nice sized well on the opposite side to the last feeding, and instead of just dumping the meal in, I spread it evenly over the not so perfectly flat surface, and placed the bowl load back into the bin. I did this, in all honesty to get worms feeding from the top and the bottom, meeting in the middle, and, come next feed, I may have to refurbish my first bin. This shit(no pun intended), is multiplying at an alarming rate, quicker than I could have imagined, it's all good though, I may have to outsource to my father in law, if he'll allow me the opportunity, to make a predetermined set of sales via his website http://www.bigdaddieorganics.com, unless, I can hold off until the Change I spoke of in my last post, happens, and I get sales set up here. We'll see as time goes by... BBS.

Inside the next four and a half months(I will be due some vacation pay), I am planning the purchase of a few items to start selling. My cousin, Jeremy, forced me into this option, lol, by making me open up my mind. People will soon be driving by, going to little league games and practices, the everyday trips to Leo's, the community liquor store just down the road, the laundry, hell, I plan to divert their attention on their way to Giovannis'.

Last summer, just a few short months residing in our newly purchased(well, acquired) home, I did a lot of cooking on the back porch. I, never hindered by the weather, will use my grill in the dead of winter, so, my grill gets a lot of use. The porch, is mainly for family meals, when I recieve said extra funds, I pull my grill to the front yard, and invite all passers-by, the opppurtunity to stop. Jay Downs, your free pulled pork sandwich is top priority, just bring more people and some extra cash.

I never really liked fried eggs, as a child growing up, I was the scrambled kind of kid. I've always attested my love of food to the mature state of my tastebuds. On the side of the sandwhich that housed the egg, I slathered on a thin coat of mayo and some hot sauce, the other side featured a poppy seed dressing. Then, you know I'm making changes. The biggest is, my wife, Stephanie, and I have returned to School. Not for no other reason, but to obtain a degree, and if all else fails with the actuall plans, I'll have something that I can return to. I didn't get the financial windfall I had expected at tax time, therefore, nothing exciting is gettin' ready to pop-off. I can't put an end to the debt that is bogging me down. It's got me thinking tho, I'm about to try and raise the money.

It's time to feed the worms, this is how I obtain their feed. This feeding consist of 3 and 4 day old potato peels, and some rotting lettuce(iceburg). I choose to process the food to a pure'e(not actuall spelling), not because the worms can not devour the content, but, to speed up the process.

I grilled an smoked some ribs Sunday night, after they had marinated a few hours, that were to die for. Corn pudding and green beans w/potatoes, accompanied the meal. My wife captured a pic of a Peach crumble, that was for dessert that night. I failed to take any pics, I juss wanted to eat. For some strange reason, her phone won't send it to mine. Only a handful of people connected here, have tasted my creations, they can vouch for my flavors... trust that when I tell you both courses of the meal were nothing short of amazing.

The one crop we have planted, I don't think is going to grow, is the iceburg lettuce. We dropped the seed a few weeks too late, for a couple of different reasons I've already explained. It's more of a cool weather, early seedling crop, and most of this heat has been unbearable on it's early life, so we've probably baked the seed. I would be utterly shocked if they do come to maturity. But alas, I'm not really concerned, for I wasn't really growing it for my taste. I've posted before on the nutrional value or lack there of, of iceburg, and really haven't eaten it in some 5yrs. I grow it(well tried), because I know there are people who will eat it, and when the time is right, I'm down to make a buck or two.

Got home this moring after my double shift, and went to check the bed because of the heavy downpour that ran through the city. Standing on the back porch, I noticed what I thought was a color change of just a few leaves, from green to a very vibrant yellow. Of course I thought that was strange, so I moved in closer for a better view, and to my delightful surprise, I noticed what others have for the past few years been calling a delicacy, and so been wanting to try, and now soon, I shall have my fill of Squash Blossoms.

Something else that got my attention, two bees hovering around the inside of one of the flowers, moving the pollen, a vital part of that growing process, and one I plan to incorporate more fully into this diabolicle plan of mine, as I am soon to purchase a few bamboo beehives I ran across a little over a year ago, to be able to produce my own honey.
Salivating over the possibilities, I can't wait for this to come to fruition.

Not Too Much More Larger Than This

I'm using this growing season as a learning experience, not for any failed planting, the vegetation looks amazing. The bed itself is not where I want it to be in size, yet, only because the yard itself is heavily covered with very thick roots, a problem I hadn't planned on before digging, mainly because the trees in my yard are so widely spaced. The time I've saved not digging, I've turned into study time. Reading everything I can on gardening how tos(open pollenation of tomatoes), to the ins and outs of starting early to extending the season... my thumb and my mind are getting greener by the minute.

Tax time is fast approaching, and before the next planting season, everything should be in order. I am in desparate need of some heavy equipment, stump and root grinders, for which I've researched a few of my local tool rental companies, a tiller which I will purchase, more than likely the Mantis, and I'll prolly go in heavy with some top soil additives, though from the looks of things, I may not have to, as I said, the vegetation is doing quite well, I believe in large part due to the addition of most of the vermipost I had on hand. I'll see where this crop takes me and with newly acquired knowledge, by this time next year(don't forget, I also moved here after the beginning of the growing season), I should have more than triple this years plants. And with plans to purchase a couple more worm bins, the stalks and leaves and the vegetation that doesn't quite make it, will make compost.

Here take a look. You can see the green sprout from the earlier post, and two very prominent yellowish leaves, I trust is either yellow or orange bell peppers, or squash. If you look to the top of the bottom yellow leaf, you'll notice stem breaking ground, and also just to the left of the top leaf. While I'm at it, I might as well show you the other thriving vegetables. The green beans are goin' off. There gettin' it for all it's worth. God is backing this idea, with the aide of Mother Nature.

Extra Space, Means Extra Produce. Extra produce means, Extra Meals I can prepare gardenfresh, for you daily. I'm buyin' 'em as I see 'em, cause I'm not afraid to use 'em. All aspects of a meal, I've told you, I will have hands in, though Alex's Super Sandwich thingy, may appear on the menu, and you should already know my plans, for Stephanies' potatoe salad to place as my top billin' side, to my "Almost Award Winning... Oh, It's Never been Entered Before Sauce!! Everything I plan to bring you has already garnered a small local following, consisting mostly of coworkers and a few neighbors from the old apartment complex, and it's surrounding areas. I'm friends with the Huntington Ribfest, Huntington, WV. via Facebook. I've asked them a few times now, how someone of my stature can get in on the festivities, they've yet to divulge any pertinent information, for fear, I believe of me comin in and knockin off all the big boys of the game. I've touted from the first time I asked, that I'm a garaunteed money winner, and the way all of my so called guinea pigs rant and rave over meals I've shared with them, I'm gunnin for the top spot.

What makes me so confident in my claims? We have 52 states and only 5 Texas, Tennessee, Missouri and the Carolinas are considered the BBQ capitals. Well, I'm from Tennessee, I love the Carolinas, and I know all there secrets, and for that fact I believe they fear lil ol' me. I reside in the state of Ohio, and I will make it a known capital of BBQ.

Keepin' in tradition of what all this has been about, today I fed the worms a mixture of 4 apples and a banana, all with the skins, and about 5 small celery stix and some baby carrots from a veggie tray purchased by a coworker or two. I think the apples may have been from a gift basket.

I am starting out with 285 sq. ft. Pretty good start. More than likely, before anything goes into the ground, here in the next week and a half, or so, I may use some of my time in extending about another 41/2'(10:05 pm 6/07/11 more thought process, maybe 6 feet all the way around), each way in the bed. That would give me, serving my community, fresh vegetation, out of 458.25 sq. ft.,(837 sq ft), by harvest time, I'm hoping to have in my possesion, a canner and some jars.
Also don't be mislead as to what you see in this pic, I know you're probably looking, you see no fence, and thinking critters. But, if I'm telling you, what it is that you're asking, then know, that I myself have had this idea from around month 8 of this whole thought process. I'm beginning first by combating the burrowing rodents, rabits, gophers, weasles... if weasles burrow, they won't be coming at the roots of my system. The overall goal is taking shape and coming to fruition. Upon the completion of bed exstention, I will have purchased a couple of different items, for smoothing out the bed, spacing out my rows, and oh Yeah!!, protecting my crops at the initial investment. The seasons weather, and the work of the underground, have done a double team on the seeds = Vermipost: BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER!!!

It's not the 3200 Sq.ft. I was Hoping for.

But, it is a start. After a couple of days now watching the rise and hourly progression of the sun, I've realized a couple of different things. Starting small is my first option. My Yard is very shaded, due to 5, very overgrown trees. Along with the one in the front yard coming down, I had already spoke of scaling back some branches, of the other 4. Well, I'll hafta go higher than expected, in each tree to bring in ample sunlight. Overtime, this will be achieved, every bit of extra money I make and can pour back into the land/business, I will. Well, I'm not exactly where I want to be, but as I said in the beginning, It's going to be a long slow process... that point I believe I have made evident. But, truly for the first time, I can now grow as fast as my crops allow me.

You know now from yesterday's post, the ground work is now underway. Today, I had my eldest son, Kyler, begin the moving of the dirt to the tarp. In my philosophy of work smart, not hard, I also joined in... my volonteers, readily chippin' in. In the upper right hand corner of the tarp, facing the house, what you see on top of the dirt is finely minced carrot. Reason being, I've incorporated the work of the underground and most of the vermipost that they've produced, over the course of the last four years. I've left some of the casting in the original habitat, for consumption from the second batch, still to be purchased. The goal of the tarp is for the worms that I have inhabited here, to multiply. I've undoubtably done that with the space that I've provided them. I'm serious in my endevours, in the here and now is where my life changes. All the labor intensive hours, I've put in to bring you flavor, via breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

WTF MAN... WHO ATE MY BACON???!!!!(usually, will bring out the Dr. Jekyel)... I buy bacon for my own consumption, if I share any with you, consider yourself lucky. Baked potatoes for an instantce, who in there right mind doesn't like a fully loaded baked potatoe... the Chef in me realizes that, and I'm happy to oblige. The hungry, home cook in me, the man who buys certain Items to accompany certain meals, I eat to satisfy my tatstebuds, not yours, you eat because I allow you the pleasure.
2 cases in point: A few months ago, back at the Old Place, having already had supper earlier that night, Mr. Hyde, had already prepared the evening meal for the overstayed, now unwelcomed guest, who had pushed to the limit, erything she could possibly do wrong. Well it was time for the midnight snack I normally prepare just for just myself and the wife, sometimes the baby is awake and will join in the festivities. I happened to be craving BLTs at this particular time, so, that's what the hell we ate. My mother in law in the other room, up watching TV, and she was getting no bacon(the baby didn't either). I don't recall what he did eat, but it wasn't bacon. I proceded to make our sandwiches, and then zipped off up the stairs, to devour down the groceries. A few minutes had passed, when all of a sudden, I smelled, well bacon. My first thought was "Oh, it's just the lingering aroma, from what I myself, had just made. Then it got stronger... I finished off my sandwich, blood boiling, and waited for the Mrs. to finish hers off, so that I could go investigate, I mean take our plates to the kitchen. In comes Dr. Jekyel, after he wittnesses another pan had been used to fry up some MORE DAMNED BACON, I then proceded to tell My mother in law, if you have to eat bacon everytime you smell it(most people do), that she was gonna have to buy her own supply, cause she was cuttin me short on my bacon consumption. My oldest son @16, doesn't know how, or should I say hasn't been taught the fine art of cooking bacon, for this very reason. If I were to teach him, let's just say that one of the people in this story, wouldn't be around to tell it LOL.
So, what sent me in this rage to write this? The bacon, I just wasn't sure how to tell it, and then, well she again, in her overstayed state of being, messes with my food. Oh, believe me, this time it wasn't bacon, she learned that lesson. Last Sunday, 5/15/11, if you remember, the family had hotdogs. Well, in order to achieve this wonderfully simple meal, I needed to go to the store and aqcuire a few things. To get there, I had to walk, which is a favorite pass-time, so from me no complaint, except that it was a tad bit chilly, which the brisk walk would soon take care of, but on the way back, it had started to drizzle, there in lies the complaint. My children, specifically, the one not pictured, with the family during meal time, had requested the hotdogs, with which, I knew I had to jump to action in making the sauce. The family, and all who are lucky enough to try it enjoy the sauce. Matter of fact, my cousin(he makes his own) is still as of lastnight(05/23/11) at work, trying to learn the secret... prolly the thirtieth time I've been asked the question. I've overtime, parted with some knowledge, but what master, parts with all he knows? Just as in the potatoe, I like my hotdogs stuffed. So in my visit to the store, I purchased all that wasn't at home to load my hotdogs. Meat to make the sauce, onions, coleslaw, some spices, french fries to accompany the meal. That was a slightly overwhelming load, for the trek back home.
So what's all the fuss? As I stated earlier, I cook to satisfy my cravings, and plan all the meal accompniments accordingly, which means, you don't get to eat the last of anydamnthing I buy, you eat the leftovers of the actuall meal itself. You didn't ask for the works, that I myself walked to the store to buy using my money. I awoke Sunday afternoon, hungry as usuall, ready to eat one of two things. At the time I wasn't sure which oneit was I was about to eat. Saturday, the night before I made the hotdog sauce, I made pulled pork... if you go back through the words of this very post, you'll notice the only ingredient to match up with both meals is the coleslaw. Now by this time I had deduced who it was that had eatin it, but she was in her room eating, I heard the fork scraping the plate she was eating from. I sort of stumbled around the kitchen, still dumbfounded that someone could do something so haneous, even though she feels as though the world should cater to her every becon call, I knew at the instant I found it missing, that we had made the recent purchase of a small personal fridge for the bedroom, to combat this very issue. After about eight minutes hovering around the kitchen, she entered with plate in hand, with proof who ate it, I told her point blank, I wish she wouldn't have eaten the last of my coleslaw. She got mad, said she'd buy me more, which I know by the time she gets paid, she will have hoped I forgot. Still steamed about this more than a week later, we all know that ain't gonna happen.
While I'm on the subject if things that burn my ass in the culinary world, and fitting into this story... If someone don't create a hotdog bun big enough to house all the gourmet toppings normal people like to add, well oh shit, I guess I'll just do this myself. It's something I've been planning on for almost two years now anyway... and who do I put the order in to for the extinction of capers?

This Massive tree, prominent to my front yard, may have to come down. Already on most of the trees, I have to crop branches, in order to have ample walking space to till, and ample height, most importantly, for the produce to, well, Produce, so cutting one down should be no big task, with the exception there are electric wires running through it, all the more enhancing my reasoning for it coming down.
